Mount St. Francis South Lands Update & Public Meeting

October 25, 2019

After the Ad Hoc Committee presented the Community Enhancement Evaluation to Cochrane Town Council on June 24, 2019, the Franciscan Friars of western Canada met on August 19 to discuss and review the three development scenarios presented to Town Council to determine a recommended strategic path forward for the South Lands. On September 18, the Franciscan Provincial Council (the governing authority of the Franciscans and owners of the South Lands) met to review and affirm these desires.

The Ad Hoc Committee and B&A Planning Group have been given direction from the Holy Spirit Province of Canada to pursue an Area Structure Plan (ASP) that will propose the following:

  • A thoughtfully-placed residential neighbourhood within the “bench” of the South Lands
  • Open space and connections in response to the Town’s Open Spaces Master Plan, to allow access to the existing privately-owned land by all
  • Environmental preservation through environmental reserve areas
  • Improved mobility and enhanced access to the land for all modes of transportation
  • Community amenities for the Town of Cochrane that are in accord with Franciscan values and mission, and with sustainable neighbourhood design
  • Focal points to provide views and vistas for all to enjoy
  • Acknowledgement of the historical and spiritual significance of the land

UPCOMING ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Understanding the historical, technical and environmental sensitivities associated with the South Lands, the Ad Hoc Committee, with support from B&A Planning Group, will conduct an integrated communications and engagement program to provide transparent information and opportunities for stakeholders, neighbours and the public to participate in a substantive ASP engagement process.

The MSF South Lands ASP engagement will build on the knowledge and input gained during the first round of consultation with stakeholders, neighbours and the public, and will provide multiple opportunities for all Cochranites to participate throughout the ASP process.

PUBLIC MEETING

Please join the Ad Hoc Committee on Saturday, November 2, 2019 where we will share additional details about the ASP vision and process, and collect input that will be considered while drafting the Area Structure Plan.
